Moraga Gild was founded in 1996 at the Penitenciary of Alhaurin de la Torre, in Málaga (Spain), by a group of prisioners and staff from this same Center, with the aim of guide the artistic and creative interests of those who are deprived of freedom. Among its Objectives is the creation and producction of art as a new bet inside of a close word like the penitenciary enviroment; as well as showing those works outside, with the aim of changing concepts and stereotypes related with the life behind the walls.
The artistic activity fulfils a therapeutic function having an effect on the personal development of the person, encouraging his creative capacity, fostering the free expression and reinforcing his identity and self-esteem. The only rights restricted are the ones impossed by the sentence, and the aim is the individual rehabilitation onto the social enviroment where he must to be back once he to have fulfilled it; that’s why we have to use every resource at our reach in order to get these objectives.
Effort and constancy have been fruitful along these years in which we come developing this work full of challenges, the first goals have been largely overcome and the Penitenciary of Málaga is a reference in what creativity and esthetic personality is concerned: corredors and outbuildings are a pictorial and creative gallery where each artist has left his trace.
One of our objectives was jumping over the walls with the creative freedom of art, something that we have largely got with the support of Organizations and Institutions: Ministry of Interior and Equality, Secretariat of Penitenciary Institutions, County Council, City Councils, public and privated galleries that have gave their facillities for hanging our works, and especially people who have made our work easier wherever we go with our proyects.
The real central characters of Moraga Gild are the prisioners with their work and illusion on giving artisttical expression to their restlessnesses and hopes, thanking for every oportunity provided for showing their works, the awards given and the exceptional future projection that they are enjoying.
